WITH THE KING’S PRIVILEGE. A "privilege" was a legal grant of exclusive publishing rights, an early form of copyright protection issued by the monarch.
The engraving on this page, created by René Lochon, features three putti (winged infants) surrounding a royal monogram. The interlaced "L" beneath a crown represents King Louis XIV, signaling the royal patronage under which this prestigious work was published.
