Having long since completed two inquiries, necessary at this time: namely, whether it is permitted to forge a new philosophy, and whether it is permitted and expedient to diminish the Peripatetic sect The followers of Aristotle’s philosophy, which dominated medieval and Renaissance universities. and the authority of the pagan philosophers, and to introduce in their place a new philosophy according to the doctrine of the saints into Christian schools; now I am invited to another specific controversy by those who detest the method of philosophizing championed by Galileo the Florentine Galileo Galilei (1564–1642). Scholars often identified people by their home city; Galileo was from Florence., for the reason that it seems to establish dogmas contrary to the Sacred Scriptures. I shall oblige, as far as my circumstances permit.
I shall conclude the whole matter in five chapters. And first, indeed, I will bring forward arguments attacking Galileo. Second, I will submit reasons defending him. Third, I will establish certain hypotheses original: "hypotheses." In this context, foundational principles or premises upon which the later judgment will be based. for the two-part decision that follows. Fourth, I will respond to the arguments attacking Galileo. Fifth, I will state what weight should be given to the reasons defending him.
