¶ After they were led captive to Babylon, Jeconiah fathered Shealtiel;
Shealtiel fathered Zerubbabel;
Zerubbabel fathered Abiud;
Abiud fathered Eliakim;
Eliakim fathered Azor;
Azor fathered Zadok;
Zadok fathered Achim;
Achim fathered Eliud;
Eliud fathered Eleazar;
Eleazar fathered Matthan;
Matthan fathered Jacob;
Jacob fathered Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born that Jesus who is called Christ.

All the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations. And from David until the captivity in Babylon are fourteen generations. And from the captivity in Babylon until Christ are also fourteen generations.

¶ The birth of Christ was in this way: When his mother Mary was betrothed original: "maryed." In the 16th century, this often referred to the formal legal commitment of betrothal which preceded the couple living together. to Joseph, before they came to live together, she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. Then her husband Joseph, being a righteous original: "parfect." Used here to mean a man who is just and follows the law. man and unwilling to publicly disgrace original: "defame." To shame or ruin someone's reputation. her, intended to divorce original: "put her awaye." To end the marriage contract or betrothal. her secretly. While he thought about this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying: "Jo-

seph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. She shall bring forth a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. For he shall save his people from their sins."

All this was done to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: "Behold, a virgin original: "mayde." Historically referring to a young, unmarried woman. shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel," which means original: "which is as moche to saye be interpretacion." "God with us." original: "Emanuel" is a Hebrew name meaning "God [is] with us."

As soon as Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took his wife to him; and he did not have marital relations with her original: "knewe her not." A traditional idiom for sexual intimacy. until she had brought forth her firstborn son, and he called his name Jesus.

The Second Chapter.

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem, a town in Judea original: "Jury." A 16th-century term for the land of the Jews or Judea., in the time of King Herod, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying: "Where is he that is born King of the Jews? We have seen his star in the east and have come to worship him."

¶ When King Herod had heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. He sent for all the chief priests and scribes of the people and asked them where Christ should be born. They said to him: "In Bethlehem, a town in Judea. For thus it is written by the prophet: 'And you, Bethlehem, in the lo-'"
