¶ The birth of Christ was in this way: When his mother Mary was betrothed original: "maryed." In the 16th century, this often referred to the formal legal commitment of betrothal which preceded the couple living together. to Joseph, before they came to live together, she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. All this was done to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: "Behold, a virgin original: "mayde." Historically referring to a young, unmarried woman. shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel," which means original: "which is as moche to saye be interpretacion." "God with us." original: "Emanuel" is a Hebrew name meaning "God [is] with us."
