¶ Then Herod privately called the wise men and diligently inquired of them the time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying: "When you have arrived there, search diligently for the child. And when you have found him, bring me word so that I may come and worship him also."
When they had heard the king, they departed; and look, the star which they saw in the east went before them until it came and stood over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were marvelously glad. And they entered into the house and found the child with Mary his mother, and knelt down and worshipped him, and opened their treasures, and offered to him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And after they were warned in their sleep that they should not go back to Herod, they returned into their own country by another way.
¶ After they had departed, look, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in his sleep, saying: "Rise and take the child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word. For Herod will seek the child to destroy him." Then he arose and took the child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt, and was there until the death of Herod, to fulfill that which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, who says: "Out of Egypt have I called my son."
¶ Then Herod, perceiving that he was mocked
by the wise men, was exceedingly angry, and sent forth and slew all the children who were in Bethlehem and in all the surrounding regions original: "costes." In this period, "coasts" referred to borders, regions, or surrounding districts, not necessarily land by the sea., as many as were two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently searched out from the wise men.
¶ Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah original: "Jeremi.", saying: "On the hills was a voice heard: mourning, weeping, and great lamentation. Rachel weeping for her children, and she would not be comforted because they were no more."
¶ When Herod was dead, look, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in Egypt, saying: "Rise and take the child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel. For they are dead who sought the child’s death." Then he rose up and took the child and his mother and came into the land of Israel.
But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea original: "Jury." in the place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Notwithstanding, after he was warned in his sleep, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee and went and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, to fulfill that which was spoken by the prophets: "He shall be called a Nazarene original: "of Nazareth."."
