and persecute you, and shall falsely say all manner of evil sayings against you for my sake. Rejoice and be glad, for great is your reward in heaven. For so they persecuted the prophets who were before your days.

¶ You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt has once become unsavory, what can be salted with it? It is from then on good for nothing, but to be cast out the doors, and for men to tread it underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden, neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it gives light to all who are in the house. See that your light so shines before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

¶ You shall not think that I have come to destroy original: "disasnull." the law or the prophets. No, I have not come to destroy them, but to fulfill them. For truly I say to you, till heaven and earth perish, one jot or one tittle of the law shall not pass away till all is fulfilled.

¶ Whoever breaks one of these least commandments and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever shall observe and teach them, that person shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

¶ For I say to you, except your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you cannot enter into the kingdom of heaven.

¶ You have heard how it was said to those of the old time: "You shall not kill." Whoever

shall kill shall be in danger of judgment. But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother shall be in danger of judgment. Whoever shall say to his brother "Raca" An Aramaic term of contempt meaning "empty-headed" or "worthless." shall be in danger of a council. But whoever shall say to his brother "You fool" shall be in danger of hellfire. Therefore, when you offer your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has anything against you: leave your offering there before the altar and go your way first and reconcile yourself to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

¶ Agree with your adversary at once while you are on the way with him, lest your adversary deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer original: "minister.", and then you are cast into prison. I say to you truly: you shall not come out from there until you have paid the uttermost farthing.

¶ You have heard how it was said to them of old time: "You shall not commit adultery." But I say to you, that whoever looks on a woman original: "wyfe." to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.

¶ Why, if your right eye offends you, pluck it out and cast it from you. It is better for you that one of your members perish than that your whole body should be cast into hell. Also, if your right hand offends you, cut it off and cast it from you. It is better that one of your members perish than that all your body should be cast into hell.
