* But I say to you: Love your enemies, bless 44
those who curse you, do good to those who hate
you, and pray for those who mistreat original: "լկկեն" (lkk'en), to revile or harass and
persecute you; * so that you may be children of your Father who 45
is in heaven; for he makes his sun to rise on the evil and the good,
and sends rain on the just and the sinners. * For 46
if you love those who love you, what reward
will you have? Do not even the tax collectors tax collectors: original "մաքսաւորք" (maksavork), locals who collected taxes for the Roman Empire, often despised as traitors and extortioners do the same? * And 47
if you only greet your friends, what
more are you doing? Do not even the tax collectors and sinners
do the same? * Therefore, be perfect, 48
as your heavenly Father is perfect.

CHAPTER 6

before men, as if to be seen by them; otherwise
you will have no reward from your Father who
is in heaven. * So whenever you give charity, do not sound 2
a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites hypocrites: original "կեղծաւորք" (keghdzavork), meaning actors or those who wear a mask to hide their true intent do in the
synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be glorified
by men. Truly I say to you: that is their
reward. * But when you give charity, do not let 3
your left hand know what your right hand is doing, * so that 4
your charity may be in secret; and your Father, who sees in
secret, will reward you openly. * And when 5
you stand to pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they
love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street
corners, so that they may appear to men. Truly I say to you:
that is their reward. * But when you stand 6
for prayer, enter into your inner room and shut your door,
and pray to your Father in secret; and your Father,
who sees in secret, will reward you openly.
* And when you stand for prayer, do not babble like 7
the pagans original: "հեթանոսս" (het'anoss), referring to non-Christian/non-Jewish Gentiles; for they think that by their many words
they will be heard. * Therefore, do not be like them; 8
for your Father knows what you need, even before you
ask—
