ACCORDING TO MATTHEW.* The manuscript uses the spelling "ΜΑΘΘΑΙΟΝ" (Maththaion) with a double 'theta,' a characteristic found in the oldest Greek codices.

Orthographical notice. In the manuscript, the iota which we call "subscript" A tiny Greek 'i' usually written beneath a vowel to indicate a grammatical ending is omitted; furthermore, the marks for accents and breathing are placed on the first rather than the second letter of a vowel pair diphthong. In these matters, I decided not to preserve the specific handwriting style paleography of the manuscript in this edition. In other respects, however, I have consistently retained the manuscript’s frequent use of the letter combination "ei" in place of "i" (especially when used for a long vowel), even though a later hand went through the manuscript and removed these vowel pairs in many places.
