Section E Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when his 18
mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was
found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. And Joseph her hus- 19
band, being a righteous man and not wishing to disgrace her publicly, planned to
release her secretly. But after he had considered these things, behold, an an- 20
gel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying: "Joseph, son of David,
do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for that which is
conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you 21
shall call his name Jesus; for he will save his people
from their sins." Now all this happened so that what was 22
spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled, saying: "Behold, the vir- 23
gin shall be with child and shall bear a son, and they shall call his
name Emmanuel," which is translated as, "God with us." original: "Ἐμμανουήλ... μεθ’ ἡμῶν ὁ θεός"
Section 6 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the an- 24
gel of the Lord had commanded him, and he took her as his wife. And 25
