II. 11 * Second hand: Galilee.
...fulfilled what was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying: "A voice 18
was heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her child-
ren; and she would not be comforted, because they are no more." But when 19
Herod had died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream
to Joseph in Egypt, saying: "Rise, take the child 20
and his mother, and go into the land of Israel; for those who
were seeking the child's life are dead." So he rose, took the 21
child and his mother, and entered into the land of Israel. But 22
when he heard that Archelaus Herod the Great's son, known for his cruelty. was reigning over Judea in place of his father
Herod, he was afraid to go there; and having been warned in a dream,
he withdrew into the regions of Galilee*. And he went and settled 23
in a city called Nazareth; so that what was spoken through the
prophets might be fulfilled: "He shall be called a Nazarene original: "Ναζωραῖος" (Nazōraios). This title likely links Jesus to various Old Testament prophecies regarding a "branch" or "consecrated one."."

preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying: "Repent repentoriginal: "μετανοεῖτε" (metanoeite) — literally meaning a change of mind or heart, turning back to God.; for the 2
kingdom of heaven is at hand." For this is he who was spoken of through Isa- 3
iah the prophet, saying: "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Pre-
pare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.'" And this 4
John had his clothing made of camel's hair,
and a leather belt around his waist; and his food was
locusts and wild honey. Then Jerusalem was going out to him, 5
and all Judea, and all the region around the Jordan.
And they were being baptized in the Jordan River by him, confess- 6
ing their sins. But when he saw many of the Pharisees* and 7
Sadducees The Pharisees were strict observers of religious law, while the Sadducees were a wealthy priestly sect. coming to the baptism, he said to them: "Brood
of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming
wrath? Therefore, produce fruit worthy of repentance. And do not think 8
to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father'; for I tell you 9
that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones."
