III.

10 Even now the axe* is laid to the root of the trees; every
tree, therefore, that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown
11 into the fire. I indeed baptize you in water for repentance; but he who
comes after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy
to carry; he will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and

from the heavens, saying: "This is my beloved Son, in

to the holy city, and set him on the pinnacle of the
6 temple. And he says to him: "If you are the Son of God, cast yourself down;
for it is written, 'He will give his angels charge concerning you,'
and 'on their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.'"
