This study is based on two papers: one presented at the annual meeting of the American Historical Association Founded in 1884, this is the largest professional organization for historians in the United States., held in Rochester, New York, on December 30, 1926; and the other at the annual meeting of the American Oriental Society One of the oldest scholarly societies in the United States, focused on the languages and cultures of Asia and the Near East., held in Cincinnati, Ohio, on April 20, 1927. The author wishes to thank Professor Dana C. Munro (1866–1933) was a renowned historian of the Crusades. Dana C. Munro, President of the American Historical Association; Professor James A. Montgomery (1866–1949) was a distinguished scholar of Semitic languages. James A. Montgomery, President of the American Oriental Society; and Professor Harold H. Bender (1882–1951) was a prominent linguist and philologist. Harold H. Bender, Chairman of the Department of Oriental Languages and Literatures at Princeton University, for many valuable suggestions and criticisms.
