INDIAN NOTES

The circular seal of the Museum of the American Indian, Heye Foundation. The outer border contains the text "MUSEUM OF THE AMERICAN INDIAN" in the upper arc and "HEYE FOUNDATION" in the lower arc. The central field of the seal features an American bison facing right, surrounded by various Indigenous original: "Indian" artifacts including a peace pipe, a ceramic vessel, a tomahawk, and a basket. The entire inner scene is framed by a wreath of leaves, with a five-pointed star at the top center.

MUSEUM OF THE AMERICAN INDIAN

The Museum of the American Indian, Heye Foundation, was established in New York City in 1916 by George Gustav Heye. Its collection, one of the most comprehensive in the world, eventually became the foundation of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian.
