"...you are my second self; and this good fortune has taken possession of you as well. Do you, O son of Sumitrā Sumitrā was the second wife of King Dasharatha; her son is Lakshmana., enjoy every desirable thing and the privileges pertaining to royalty. My life and this kingdom I desire for your sake alone." Having said this to Lakshmana, and paid reverence to his mother, Rāma, with their permission, went with Sītā to his own quarters.
Having given his directions to Rāma regarding his installation on the morrow, the king, summoning his priest Vasistha The royal chaplain and chief spiritual advisor to the house of Ikshvaku. spoke to him, saying—"O you who possess asceticism as your wealth, go to Kākutstha A title for Rāma, meaning 'descendant of Kakutstha,' an ancient king in his lineage., and for his welfare and the successful attainment of the kingdom, have him observe a fast along with my daughter-in-law Sītā.."
Thereupon, saying, "So be it," that best of those versed in the Veda The ancient and primary sacred scriptures of India., the worshipful Vasistha—conversant with mantras Sacred chants, prayers, or ritual formulas. and practicing excellent vows—mounted a Brāhma car A sacred or priestly chariot suitable for a high-ranking Brahmin. and went personally to the residence of Rāma, who was himself well-versed in sacred chants, for the purpose of helping him prepare for the fast.
And that foremost of ascetics, having reached Rāma's dark-hued residence—which resembled a mass of clouds—passed through three separate courtyards while mounted on his chariot. To honor the saint so worthy of honor, Rāma quickly came out of his home. And nearing the chariot of that wise man, Rāma personally took him by the hand and helped him descend. Finding Rāma so humble and dear, the priest addressed him, pleasing and delighting him with acceptable words—"O Rāma, your father has been well pleased with you, since you are achieving the kingdom through him. Do you today fast with Sītā. And in the morning, the king, your father Dasharatha, will, being well-pleased, install you as heir-apparent."
