Section Six: Concerning the Natures and Temperaments of the Planets According to Their Distance from the Sun

After the Moon Moon original: 太陰 (Tàiyīn), literally "Great Yin." and the Sun Sun original: 太陽 (Tàiyáng), literally "Great Yang." meet in conjunction:

From conjunction to the first quarter original: 上弦 (shàngxián); the waxing half-moon phase., its nature is moist.
From the first quarter to the full moon original: 望 (wàng); literally "to gaze," the moment of opposition where the moon faces the sun., its nature is hot.
From the full moon to the last quarter original: 下弦 (xiàxián); the waning half-moon phase., its nature is dry.
From the last quarter until they meet in conjunction again, its nature is cold.

When the three stars of Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars original: 土木火三星 (Tǔ-Mù-Huǒ sān xīng); identifying the planets by their elemental associations: Earth, Wood, and Fire. meet in conjunction with the Sun:

After conjunction until they reach the first station first station original: 第一位留處 (dì yī wèi liú chù); the point where a planet appears to stop in the sky before beginning retrograde motion., their nature is mostly moist.
From the first station until they are in opposition opposition original: 相衝 (xiāngchōng); the point where the planet is 180 degrees across from the Sun. to the Sun, their nature is mostly hot.
From the point of opposition until they reach the second station second station original: 第二位留處 (dì èr wèi liú chù); the point where a planet appears to stop before resuming direct motion., their nature is mostly dry.
From the second station until they meet in conjunction with the Sun again, their nature is mostly cold.

After the two stars of Venus and Mercury original: 金水二星 (Jīn-Shuǐ èr xīng); the planets of Metal and Water. meet in conjunction with the Sun:

From conjunction until the first station, their nature is mostly moist.
From the first station, they begin retrograde motion retrograde motion original: 逆行 (nìxíng); the apparent backward movement of a planet across the sky., and afterward meet with the Sun once more.
