While traditional medicine usually refers to "six entrails," the author here specifies seven.. For this reason, these sores are extremely numerous and vary greatly in their appearance.
Some are shaped like water chestnuts, some like lotus flowers, and some like pierced intestines. Others resemble mouse nipples, flower petals, or honeycombs. There are those shaped like hanging pearls, intestine hooks, walnuts, chestnuts, cockscombs, or coral, and even some that resemble yoked intestines. These descriptive names were used by historical physicians to categorize the severity and specific type of growths for diagnostic purposes.
