The Pulse original: 脈 (mài). In the context of this collection of stones, this refers to the "veins" or internal structure of the rocks, as well as the "pulse" of the landscape. It also completes the poetic sequence begun on the previous page: "...the mountain guest is still [asleep]," though here the character used is "pulse," perhaps suggesting the guest is "still [feeling the] pulse" of the mountain.
