To my Elder Brother Bocheng, at your feet original: "Bocheng daxiong zuxia" (伯誠大兄 足下). This is a highly respectful epistolary form used between peers or toward an elder colleague; "at your feet" implies the writer is speaking from a position of humble service.:
I am sending over twenty volumes of the Grand Basis and related works. Additionally, attached in a separate envelope, are twenty-five volumes of Poetic Compositions fu (賦): a form of Chinese semi-poetic, semi-prose writing known for its descriptive rhapsody and ornate style. Please examine and receive them.
These consist of various short pieces and are the original draft manuscripts gaoben (藁本): an author's original handwritten draft, highly valued by collectors for showing the primary thoughts and corrections of the scholar by Zhichu Zhichu is the courtesy name of a scholar within this bibliophile circle, likely a contemporary involved in the recovery or transcription of these ancient medical works..
All other volumes are copies made later from borrowed originals. These are for your use in comparative proofreading original: "duijian" (對鑑). This refers to the meticulous scholarly process of comparing different editions or copies to identify errors, omissions, or variations in the text.. I am still waiting for further copies to be made, so for the time being they are temporarily being held here.
Because the current owner of the original manuscripts is serving in an official government post and due to recent concerns within our scholarly circle original: "xueqi" (學戚). Literally "academic relatives," referring to the close-knit network of scholars who shared intellectual lineages or collective responsibility for rare books., I do not dare borrow them for an extended period for the purpose of collation.
