We call upon the messengers of the Four Heavenly KingsThe guardians of the four cardinal directions who protect the world and the Buddhist law to provide pervasive guardianship and protection. May they repel the errors of a hundred generations and bring benefit to all living beings. We pray for ten thousand years of life, that through every kalpaAn immense period of time in Buddhist cosmology, often translated as an eon, her name shall remain incorruptible for a hundred generations. Through the empowerment of the Sovereign, may all things follow her to the left and right original: "珎" (treasure/precious), here likely referring to the mistress or her auspicious surroundings. May she be granted what she seeks begs?. Within the Imperial Court and the capital, may the beautiful Queen and the Commandery Mistress be elevated. We know not the full extent of their merits, but their loyalty is a crown for ten thousand, recognized by the hundred heavens.
With a thousand lengths of gold, the ancestors entered official service on horseback. Wearing their swords, they galloped to the right, leaping upon iron steeds. They moved with deliberate grace upon the ritual altars, standing firm in their faith for the sake of the grain and soil A traditional metaphor for the State. They exhausted the limits of power and celebration, commanding the flora of the mountains. To the West, they broke the barbarian armies original: "胡軍" (Hu jun), referring to non-Han nomadic forces, exhausting their lives and earning the title of "Loyal." They treated their own bodies lightly for the sake of the Country, even at the cost of their own treasures?. In the past, there was a Lord who worried and looked up in reverence; his talents and fame were marked in the registers of emolument. His position was transferred, his titles advanced, and he stood tall upon the true path, fulfilling his duties in the palace courts. The Great Hero The Buddha, the King, looked upon the cold sorrows of the world and bestowed his grace upon the sacred ancestors.
To advance life is to be solitary
For a long time, they were prepared. Within the virtuous and deep mists, they made offerings. In the distant deserts, they pursued the enemy. Through the rain of arrows and the clash of battle lines, they faced one another with blades crossed, making a compact with death.
Military discipline
They cut short the lives of others. In the autumn, they broke and scattered the villages. They damaged the sangharamaA Buddhist monastery or community park and the sacred temples. They burned and buried the ritual headcloths.
Following the city down to the forts
They seized the property of the Three JewelsThe Buddha, the Dharma (teachings), and the Sangha (community). They destroyed the Seven Sacred TreasuresSpiritual riches: faith, ethics, shame, dread of blame, learning, renunciation, and wisdom. They obstructed the turning of the Wheel of the DharmaThe act of teaching Buddhist doctrine. They broke the harmony of the assembly. Regarding the property of the resident monks:
Separation
They borrowed and did not return. They purchased goods at unfairly low prices. Those in power managed the people’s livelihoods, yet once they became leaders, they neglected the fundamental and the eternal. They followed their own desires, causing harm while protecting their own interests. They were arrogant and conceited, looking down upon the virtuous. They gave free rein to the five passions. They were deeply addicted to sounds and colors. The poison of their environment troubled their consciousness and disturbed their hearts and spirits.
Life perhaps involves hunting birds and beasts without benefit, climbing mountains to trap rabbits, or entering valleys to seek rare fish. Afterwards, harm is done. With clever mouths, they sing and shout, while the hawks and the kudzu vines arrive together; the living are torn apart for one’s own amusement.
These actions were in accordance with one's own feelings but caused bitterness to others. Such karmaThe law of cause and effect resulting from one's actions is immeasurable and boundless. One relies on others, on children, or on the comparison of rivers in the North. Whether in this world or in a future life, whether cultivating oneself or teaching others, seeing or hearing such things, one should feel joy and not be flustered.
Disobeying orders
Once this impurity is finished, may it be cut off forever. Abandon the things that are not beautiful. Do not repeat them intentionally. We proclaim this and together we practice repentanceoriginal: "懺悔" (chanhui), the ritual confession of sins without limits. If these are not removed from the great house, the three worlds Past, present, and future remain as one. According to the teachings of the Law, all must be removed: the unkind heart, the shell of the mind. Whether one has sin or not, let nothing be an obstacle.
