This illustration is a halftone reproduction of a traditional painting, depicting the Bodhisattva Guanyin (Avalokitesvara) in her popular manifestation as the "Guanyin of the Southern Seas." She is shown standing gracefully atop turbulent ocean waves, representing her ability to guide beings safely through the "sea of suffering" that is worldly existence. She is dressed in elegant, flowing robes with a decorated border. In her left hand, she holds a pure water vial original: 淨瓶 (Jingping); a ritual vessel containing the nectar of compassion, often used in iconography to sprinkle blessings and heal the sick.
To the upper right of the Bodhisattva, a bird is depicted in flight. This is the white parrot A common figure in Guanyin's hagiography, the parrot became a disciple of the Bodhisattva out of gratitude for her teachings and is often shown accompanying her at her island home, Mount Potalaka.
