...is merely a general number. Since Guanyin possesses the ability to deliver and liberate hundreds of thousands of millions of sentient beings, he naturally also possesses the ability to simultaneously manifest original: 化現 (huàxiàn); the act of a Buddha or Bodhisattva taking on a physical form to help others. in hundreds of thousands of millions of different identities.
Speaking of this, another problem can also be easily resolved: is Guanyin Bodhisattva male or female? This question causes endless debate among those who are generally unfamiliar with Buddhist teachings. In truth, he is able to manifest at will as either a male or female body according to the needs of the person he is trying to reach. As for his meritorious Reward Body original: 報身 (bàoshēn); also known as the Sambhogakaya, this is the celestial form of a Buddha, representing the fulfillment of their spiritual vows., it has long since transcended all desire; how could there still be any distinction between male and female?
If we speak of his solemn and majestic appearance, the sixty-eighth volume of the Eighty-fascicle Avatamsaka Sutra original: 華嚴經 (Huáyán Jīng); a massive and influential Buddhist scripture describing the interconnectedness of all things. describes him as the "Brave Hero Guanzizai" original: 勇猛丈夫觀自在 (yǒngměng zhàngfū guānzìzài). "Guanzizai" is an alternative name for Guanyin/Avalokiteshvara. The term "Brave Hero" or "Husband" (zhàngfū) historically refers to a masculine, noble figure.. It is not that he is exclusively female. It is simply that a woman’s temperament is gentle and more easily accepted by people; therefore, for the convenience of saving sentient beings, Guanyin often manifests in a female form. But please do not misunderstand—a Bodhisattva who manifests in a female body is not inherently "female" in a biological or limited sense.
Finally, let us frequently recite the name of the Greatly Compassionate and Greatly Merciful Guanyin Bodhisattva, Savior from Suffering and Distress!
