The Miaogao Terrace original: 妙高臺 (Miaogao Tai); the name is a Chinese translation of the Sanskrit Sumeru, the "Wondrously High" mountain at the center of the Buddhist universe is located on Golden Mountain original: 金山 (Jinshan) in present-day Nanhai A historical region in modern Guangdong province, specifically the Pearl River Delta. The Yue River original: 粵江 (Yuejiang); a poetic name for the Pearl River winds around the site, where a solitary peak stands in isolation. When Su Dongpo Su Shi (1037–1101), a preeminent poet, calligrapher, and statesman of the Song Dynasty passed through the Nanhai region, he frequently ascended the terrace for excursions. He composed a poem which says:
In a past life, my body was that of Deyun; original: 德雲; a Buddhist monk mentioned in the Avatamsaka Sutra who dwelt on a mountain peak. Su Dongpo often expressed the belief that he was the reincarnation of a monk from a previous life.
Faintly, I still remember the Miaogao Terrace.
This record is an account of the reality of those events. Atop the terrace, there is a Shrine to Dongpo original: 東坡祠 (Dongpo Ci) featuring a statue in his likeness.
