original: "武備志" (Wubizhi). This is the title of the most comprehensive military encyclopedia in Chinese history. Compiled by Mao YuanyiA scholar and military official (1594–1640) who dedicated fifteen years to this compilation during the late Ming Dynasty. and first published around 1621, the work was intended to provide a definitive guide for the defense of the Ming Empire against both internal rebellions and external threats like the Manchu forces.
The title is presented here on a vertical white slip of paper, a traditional Chinese bookbinding element called a tiqian. It is pasted onto a dark blue, silk-textured cover, which is characteristic of the "thread-bound" (xianzhuang) book style used during this period.
