Compendium of Materia Medica
original: 車轍水 (Chezheshui). This refers to rainwater that has collected in the deep ruts left by wagon wheels. In traditional practice, it was specifically used to treat conditions like "surging qi" or intense thirst.
original: 地漿 (Dijiang). Also known as "Yellow Earth Water." It is prepared by digging a pit in clean earth, pouring in water, stirring it to create a slurry, and then collecting the clear liquid that settles on top. It was a famous historical antidote for poisoning and "heat" illnesses.
original: 生熟湯 (Shengshutang). Literally "Raw and Ripe Soup," also called "Yin-Yang Water." This is a mixture of unboiled well water and freshly boiled water. It was believed to help harmonize the stomach and was often used to induce vomiting in cases of food poisoning.
original: 漿水 (Jiangshui). A sour, fermented liquid made by boiling millet or rice and letting it sit until it turns tart. It was used both as a refreshing beverage to improve appetite and as a medicinal liquid to clear phlegm.
original: 銅壺滴漏水 (Tonghu dilou shui). Water collected from a copper water clock (clepsydra). Because this water had spent a long time dripping through a metal vessel, it was thought to have "moving" or "circulating" properties, sometimes prescribed for issues related to the flow of internal energy.
original: 嘉祐 (Jiayou). Refers to the Jiayou Bencao, a major pharmacopoeia commissioned by the Song Dynasty emperor in the 11th century.
