When the kidney pulse scatters, energy stalls at the waist; urination is frequent, appearing both rough and slippery. Within the pulse, there is gathering and scattering, and such inconsistency defies standard signs.
A "scattered" kidney pulse indicates that the Qi The fundamental life force or energy that circulates through the body. in the lower back is stagnant. A combination of "rough" and "slippery" pulse qualities leads to excessive urination. "Gathering and scattering" refers to the pulse feeling irregular—sometimes present and sometimes absent. This "lack of evidence" means the pulse has lost its healthy, predictable rhythm.
A solid and slippery pulse makes urination rough; there is dripping pain and intense, vivid redness.
This condition represents "Fire invading the Realm of Water." The physician Jiegu original: "潔古" (Jiégǔ). The courtesy name of Zhang Yuansu (c. 1151–1234), a highly influential physician who founded the Yishui School of medicine. suggests using "Ruzheng Powder" to treat this. The term "vivid redness" refers to an extreme manifestation of heat in the urine.
When the pulse is rough, vital essence frequently leaks; the patient falls into a trance with many wandering dreams.
A rough Kidney pulse primarily indicates damage to the vital essence original: "精" (Jīng). In Chinese medicine, this is the refined substance stored in the kidneys that governs growth, reproduction, and vitality.. This leads to a state of mental confusion where dreams and reality become indistinguishable.
Hernia in the small intestine follows, and in dreams, one wades through rivers and streams.
Continuing from the discussion of the "rough" pulse: The Small Intestine is the "workshop" of the Heart; naturally, it has no direct connection to the Kidney organ. However, because the Small Intestine belongs to the Fire element and the Kidney belongs to Water, they are close in terms of internal "geography." If the Kidneys are weak and cold, they can overwhelm the Fire. Therefore, one suffers from hernia original: "疝氣" (shàn qì). A broad term in ancient medicine for abdominal pain, swelling, or protrusions in the groin area. and dreams of crossing rivers, which signifies a deficiency in the body’s Water balance.
If the pulse is solid and large, there is heat in the bladder; urination becomes difficult and will not flow.
Both "solid" and "large" are considered Yang pulses Pulses that feel strong, forceful, or superficial, usually indicating heat or excess energy.. The Kidney resides in the "Yin" (lower/dark) region of the body; for it to show a "Yang" pulse suggests that heat is invading the coolness. This creates "Damp-Heat" in the lower body, affecting the bladder and causing the urine to be red, painful, and blocked.
