The Miscellaneous Morsels from Youyang original: 酉陽雜俎 Youyang Zazu; a Tang-dynasty collection of myths and anecdotes states: The current fashion of women using "floral ornaments" original: 花子 Huazi; small decorative patterns or sequins applied to the forehead or cheeks for facial decoration began with Shangguan Zhaorong A famous female poet and high-ranking official in the court of Empress Wu Zetian. She supposedly devised them to hide a facial scar. However, I note that in the palace of Emperor Wen of the Sui dynasty, "five-colored floral ornaments" were already being applied. This proves that the practice existed before the Tang dynasty and is the ancestor of what we now call "face flowers." As for the "full crown," it is so named simply because the jewelry and accessories are arranged to fully cover the top of the crown.

These are what are known today as "temple covers" original: 掩鬢 Yanbin; wing-like ornaments that flank the face, often made of gold or inlaid with jewels.
