original: "本草綱目拾遺" (Bencao Gangmu Shiyi). This title indicates a scholarly effort to "glean" or "pick up" medicinal knowledge that was omitted or discovered after the publication of the original Compendium of Materia Medica by Li Shizhen in the 16th century.
This work, completed by the Qing dynasty physician Zhao Xuemin around 1765, is one of the most significant pharmacological texts of its era. It introduced many "foreign" medicines and folk remedies to the formal Chinese medical canon, reflecting the expanding trade and botanical knowledge of the 18th century.
