The Erya the oldest surviving Chinese encyclopedic dictionary, dating to the 3rd century BCE says: "The calendar models the Sun, the Moon, and the Stars [Chen]." The commentary states: "Chen original: 辰 refers to the place where the Sun and the Moon meet. This refers to the Sun and Moon forming a conjunction within the Twelve Stations the Shi’er Ci, twelve equal divisions of the celestial sphere used to track the sun's position. Therefore, the Zuozhuan an ancient narrative history says: 'The meeting of the Sun and the Moon is called Chen.' The commentary further explains: 'In one year, the Sun and Moon meet twelve times; the location of each meeting is defined as a Chen.' For example, in the eleventh month, the Chen is in the station of the Star Record original: 星紀, Xingji, and in the twelfth month, the Chen is in the Empty Vessel original: 玄枵, Xuanxiao, and so on."
