original: 黃精 (Huangjing); Polygonatum. This plant is a cornerstone of the Materia Medica (本草, Bencao), categorized as a "superior" herb. It was famously believed by ancient herbalists and Daoist seekers to nourish vital essence and promote longevity; legends even suggested that consuming it could allow a person to transcend the need for common food.
Description of the Illustration:
The woodblock print depicts the Yellow Essence plant growing beside a garden rock, emphasizing its natural habitat. The illustration shows its characteristic upright stalks and "lanceolate" leaves—long, narrow leaves that taper to a point. Small clusters of fruit or flowers hang delicately from the stems. Most importantly, the artist has rendered the thick, knotted rhizome (the underground stem) emerging from the soil, as this is the part of the plant used for its potent medicinal and life-extending properties.
The term "Yellow Essence" refers to the plant's yellow roots and its association with the "essence" of the earth, one of the five elements in traditional Chinese cosmology. In the Ming dynasty, it was commonly used to treat fatigue and strengthen the "spleen and lungs."
