The method of defense using "Grid Dikes" Ge-tiTransverse or "check" dikes built perpendicular to the main dikes. They create compartments that trap water if the main dike is breached, preventing the flood from spreading laterally along the entire riverbank. is truly ingenious. Because the Inner Dike original: "縷堤" (Lü-ti) cannot be relied upon alone, should a breach occur, the "cross-flow" water flowing out of the channel will hit the Grid Dike and be stopped, preventing a general inundation. Once the water recedes, it can be drained back from the high ground.
Currently, at the south bank locations of Fang Village, Dankou, Shuanggou, Majia, Danping’an, and Niu Mountain, these dikes have all been constructed within the Xuzhou border. This single line of Grid Dikes must be reinforced and repaired year after year; thus, there will be no concern about the river splitting its flow or "stealing" the channel referring to the river carving a new, destructive path through farmland. The labor required for each section is limited, but by continuing to add to the construction, the banks will be strengthened. In this matter, "the more, the better" truly applies.
Mount Dai — Fort — Lai — Summer — Platform
Newly constructed Dankou Grid Dike in the 18th year of the Wanli reign 1590 CE. At this location, the Inner Dike directly bears the brunt of the Yellow River’s main current. The channel here is narrow and the water is violent; it is impossible to defend by the old methods alone. Now, by building Grid Dikes and others, the water is allowed to expand and spread its force, accommodating its natural tendency to surge. When the water level drops, it returns to the main channel, avoiding the danger of the river being diverted or the channel being usurped.
