In the past, whenever the Yellow River overflowed and its waters rose, the current would flow backward into the Little River Mouth. Joining with the waters of the Yang River and various nearby lakes, the flood would breach the Guiren Gathering A strategic point for water control and surge directly toward the Ancestral Tombs at Sizhou. The Ming Zuling, the mausoleum of the ancestors of the Ming imperial family, which was frequently threatened by floods. This caused the main river channel to be increasingly diverted from its course. However, since the construction of the Long Levee to intercept the flow, the land behind the dike has completely dried out. The displaced people have all returned to their farming, and the regions of Fengyang and Sizhou are finally free from the danger of being struck by the surging waters.

Suqian is a major city in present-day Jiangsu province, historically a key site for managing the intersection of the Grand Canal and the Yellow River.
