Stone Dike
Sizhou was a prosperous city that was eventually completely submerged by the rising waters of Hongze Lake in the late 17th century.
Both the north and south banks now have "Remote Dikes" yaodi: secondary dikes built further back from the river to provide a wider flood basin constructed. Since the water has been returned to its proper channel, the fields and homes of the people can avoid the disaster of flooding. However, there is still fear of extraordinary rises in water levels; should the river overflow, it might breach the defenses. Therefore, these "Water Reduction Dams" jianshuiba: spillways designed to release excess water safely have been established within the Remote Dikes to divide and reduce the water's force, ensuring no catastrophic breaches occur.
