Records of Divination and Measurements: Taiyi Temple Calculations, Part Two
Page Six
A rectangular talisman (fu) contained within a border. At the top of the inner rectangle, a horizontal header reads "Talisman of the Three Stars of Solitude and Void" original: 孤虛三星符. Below the header are two sets of esoteric symbols: the upper set consists of three bow-tie or hourglass shapes arranged in a triangular pattern within a partial L-shaped frame; the lower set consists of two vertical rectangular boxes within a similar partial L-shaped frame.
In ancient Chinese military mysticism, the Yellow Emperor (Huangdi) is regarded as the source of many secret methods for securing victory. This specific talisman is meant to be carried or displayed to harness the energy of the "Solitude and Void" directions—astrological voids that, when correctly positioned behind an army, were believed to make the soldiers invisible or invincible to the enemy.
