This work, titled the "Essence of Mathematical Sciences," was the most comprehensive mathematical text of the early Qing Dynasty, integrating traditional Chinese mathematics with Western techniques introduced by Jesuit missionaries. The term "Tables" (Biao) refers to the inclusion of logarithmic or trigonometric tables often found in these volumes.

original: "Xiangjiao Guan Zhushi Chen Chen Mu" (詳校官主事臣陳木). The title "Secretary" (Zhushi) refers to a mid-level administrative position within the central government bureaus. "Your servant" (Chen) is a humble prefix required of any official when their name appears in a document intended for or commissioned by the Emperor.
At the bottom center, there is a partial decorative semi-circular border containing the character "Mountain" (Shan), which functions as a "banxin" or "plate heart"—a mark used by woodblock printers to ensure correct alignment and folding of the page.
