In the past, I have personally seen this plant growing in other locations, and its appearance did indeed match the descriptions in the Illustrated Classic original: 圖經, Tujing; referring to the Bencao Tujing. Upon tasting it, I found the flavor to be sweet, yet the local people did not recognize the plant for what it was. Tao "The Hermit" original: 隱居, Yinju; the recluse scholar Tao Hongjing, author of the Bencao Jing Jizhu once remarked that Qingzhou A historical region covering parts of modern Shandong province also produces licorice, though it is of inferior quality; it is highly probable that the plants I encountered belong to that specific variety.
