original: "海國圖志" (Haiguo Tuzhi). This monumental work was compiled by the scholar-official Wei Yuan in 1842, following China's defeat in the First Opium War. It represents one of the first major attempts by a Chinese intellectual to systematically study the geography, politics, and technology of Western nations, famously advocating for the idea of "learning the superior techniques of the barbarians to control them."
