According to the Old Tales from the Quwei Riveroriginal: "曲洧舊聞" (Quwei Jiuwen). A Song Dynasty text by Zhu Bian containing historical anecdotes and observations on nature., the Red Myrtle flower is what some call the "Tree that Cannot Endure Itching." The tree has extremely smooth, barkless wood. Legend says that if you "tickle" the trunk, the entire canopy of leaves and flowers will quiver as if the tree is laughing or ticklish. Its flowers begin to bloom in the summer and do not fall even as the autumn ends original: "秋繒" (qiū zēng). Likely a transcription variation of "秋盡" (qiū jìn), meaning the end of autumn..
