Title: Haiguo Tuzhi (海國圖志). Compiled by the scholar-official Wei Yuan (1794–1857) and first published in 1842, this monumental work was a response to China's defeat in the First Opium War. It represents a pivot in Chinese intellectual history, as Wei Yuan urged his countrymen to "learn the superior techniques of the barbarians to control them."
