A phonetic rendering of "Territory.", which in Chinese means "local regions." There is one District original: "Di-shi-te-li." A phonetic rendering of "District," referring here to the District of Columbia., which in Chinese is the "National Capital," situated in the midst of the various States. Each state is further divided into Counties original: "Gang-di-shi." A phonetic rendering of "Counties.", which in Chinese means "Small Tribes." Only the small divisions belonging to Louisiana original: "Lei-xi-a-na." are not called Counties, but are instead called Parishes original: "Ba-li-xie." A phonetic rendering of "Parishes.".
