original: 新刻出像增補搜神記 (Xīnkè Chūxiàng Zēngbǔ Sōushénjì). The term "Newly Carved" Xinke: refers to a fresh set of woodblocks carved for printing signifies a new edition. "With Illustrations" Chuxiang: literally "images emerging" alerts the reader that this version includes woodcut pictures. The Soushenji, or In Search of the Supernatural, is a famous 4th-century collection of wonders, though this "expanded" version is likely a later Ming or Qing dynasty compilation that added folk deities and popular religious lore to the original core.
