The original Chinese title is Hai Guo Tu Zhi. Compiled by the scholar Wei Yuan (1794–1857) during the late Qing dynasty, this work was a groundbreaking effort to provide a systematic account of Western geography, technology, and politics. It was written in the wake of the First Opium War with the famous goal of "learning the superior techniques of the barbarians to control them."
