Li: a traditional Chinese unit of distance, roughly equal to 500 meters or one third of a mile.
This traditional Chinese woodblock printed map of Shaanxi Province utilizes a grid system known as "Jingli," where each square represents 100 li, approximately 50 kilometers. The map is oriented with North at the top.
Key geographic features include:
1. Waterways: The Yellow River defines much of the northern and eastern boundaries. The Wei River flows horizontally across the center through the Guanzhong Plain. The Han River flows through the southern mountainous region.
2. Topography: Stylized mountain ranges are scattered throughout, with notable peaks like Mount Hua near the eastern pass and the Zhongnan Mountains south of the provincial capital.
3. Man-made structures: The Great Wall is depicted with crenelated lines along the northern frontier near Yulin and Ningxia.
4. Administrative Centers: Major cities or Prefectures are marked with square icons, often enclosed in double borders. Smaller towns, such as Counties and Departments, are marked with smaller icons or plain text.
The map includes numerous labels for passes, garrisons, and regional borders.
