May my speech be established in my mind; may my mind be established in my speech. O Self-luminous One, reveal Yourself to me. May you both referring to mind and speech be the carriers of the Veda for me. May what I have heard not depart from me. I join day and night through this study. I shall speak the Rita the cosmic or natural order. I shall speak the truth.
May That protect me. May That protect the teacher. May That protect me. May That protect the teacher, protect the teacher.
In the beginning, this universe was the Self Atman The Supreme Soul or Singular Consciousness alone. There was nothing else whatsoever that blinked. He thought: "Let me now create the worlds." 1
He created these worlds: the high waters (ambhas), the light-rays (marichi), the mortal realm (mara), and the lower waters (apas). That "high water" is beyond the heavens; the sky is its support. The "light-rays" are the atmosphere. The "mortal realm" is the earth. What is beneath it are the "lower waters." 2
He thought: "These are the worlds. Now, let me create the guardians of the worlds." From the waters themselves, He drew forth the Person Purusha The cosmic, archetypal human form and gave him shape. 3
He brooded over him used heat/austerity, known as tapas. As He was brooding over him, a mouth burst forth, just like an egg. From the mouth came speech, and from speech, Fire. The nostrils burst forth; from the nostrils came the breath, and from the breath, the Air. The eyes burst forth; from the eyes came sight, and from sight, the Sun. The ears burst forth; from the ears came hearing, and from hearing, the Directions of Space. The skin burst forth; from the skin came hair, and from the hair, the plants and trees. The heart burst forth; from the heart came the mind, and from the mind, the Moon. The navel burst forth; from the navel came the downward breath (apana), and from the downward breath, Death. The generative organ burst forth; from the organ came seed, and from the seed, the Waters. 4
These deities, once created, fell into this great ocean symbolizing the vast, chaotic state of existence before being housed in bodies. He subjected that Person to hunger and thirst. The deities said to Him: "Find us a dwelling place where we may be established and eat food." 1
He brought a cow to them. They said: "Indeed, this is not enough for us." 2
