Whence did Danaus, who just arrived in Argos, learn that the Argives are prone to vituperation? genos seems to be a bad correction. I wrote: to tede, kart' epiththonon gyne. For this is what should have been said, as it relates to this reason (to hold to a just manner of speaking): the female sex is most liable to vituperation.

193. The order of the verses in the books is this: 195, 194, 196. From this to line 282, there are no speaker labels in M. G., and in the editions, they are not everywhere they should be. The reason for the dialogue itself shows why I changed the order of the verses as I did. The scholiast wisely observed at line 194 that Danaus had already sat down. But he had sat down, as was proper, at the statue of Zeus, which it is credible had been placed in the center.
195. The books [read]: me nun. Dindorf corrected it. mechanes d' esto kratos means krateito to ergon let the deed prevail, provided that he does it.

198. The verse of the chorus' sign of the sun god seeing [them] fell out, adorned perhaps with an image of a rooster. "And of the Sun," says Pausanias V, 25, 9, "they say the bird is sacred and announces [when] the sun is about to rise." That the Sun is worshiped by the Argives is testified by an altar dedicated to him near the Inachus, mentioned by the same Pausanias II, 18, 13, which was seen on the left as one went from Mycenae to Argos.
