272. The books read to be original: "εἶναι". Since the old books have "hearing" in the preceding verse, I have written I think original: "οἶμαι", which Burges also conjectured. Otherwise, one would have to assume something has fallen out of the text.
Riding on a saddle original: "ἀστραβιζούσας" in M and P, though in M a letter was erased between the letters sigma and s. Saddle-riding original: "ἀστραβιζούσαις" in G, E, and Robortello. When he says they are carried on "horse-paced camels," he means nothing other than they are using camels like horses.
274. "And the" [plural] original: "καὶ τὰς" is said to be in M and is found in Robortello and Turnebus. "And the" [singular] original: "καὶ τὰν" in G. He could not call these women the entire nation of the Amazons. It is fortunate that the singular form in G was preserved, showing we should write and surely original: "καιτἄν". I fear M might also have the singular form. The King corrects himself and, as it were, interrupts himself, saying: And yet, I would have believed you to be Amazons, if you were armed with bows.
"Flesh-devouring" original: "κρεοβρότους" in M, G, and Robortello. "Flesh-fed" original: "κρεωβρότους" in E. I deleted the particle a small word used for emphasis or transition de, which Porson changed to te. A learned man in Butler's edition and Lobeck (in Paralipomena, page 260) rightly rejected Stanley’s "flesh-fed" original: "κρεοβότους". Regarding this matter, Diodorus Siculus (III, 53) and Eustathius (page 402, 38) and from him Eudocia (page 38) record that they were called "Sauromatians" A nomadic people often linked to the Amazon myths because they fed on lizards, turtles, and other meats, scorning bread.
275. "I likened" original: "εἴκασα" in Robortello.
276. The books have "having been taught" original: "διδαχθείς". Abresch rightly added the particle d' meaning "and" or "but".
279. "To see in the Argive manner" original: "τῇ ἰδεῖν ἀργείαι" in M; "in the Argive manner" in G, E, and Robortello’s codex. In P, it is said something is missing and "to see" is read. Sophianus reads "here in Argos."
Stanley discussed this priesthood of Io, comparing the words of Apollodorus (II. 1, 3): "Zeus seduced her while she held the priesthood of Hera," and Hesychius, as corrected by Scaliger in his notes on Eusebius (page 24): "Io was called Kallithyia, the first priestess of Hera."
280. The books read "she was, very much so" original: "ἦν ὡς μάλιστα". Critics and interpreters have strayed from the true reasoning, not noticing what must be maintained throughout this whole dialogue: the King already knows the things he is asking about; he asks only to explore whether the maidens speak the truth or falsehood. I have written "was she, most certainly?" and assigned this verse and the next to the King, who responds to the two verses of the Chorus with two verses of his own.
282. "And these were Hera's secret embrace" original: "καὶ κρυπτά γ' ἥρας ταῦτα παλλαγμάτων" in M, G, P, and E. Robortello brings "of these pollutions" original: "παλαγμάτων" from a codex. From conjecture, Robortello suggests "of these concubinages" original: "παλλακισμάτων" and Turnebus "of these embraces" original: "τῶν παλλαγμάτων". The ancient commentator's note "the entwinings" and the corrupted entry in Hesychius "entwinings" could show that what should be written is...
