...the power [of the Law] makes the things seen similar [to the truth]. And obeying piece-by-piece original: "μελιδὸν." This refers to the ritual butchering of the Paschal lamb, which Gregory interprets as a symbol for the partial or "part-by-part" revelation of God under the Law., that one having come and paid [the penalty] piece-by-piece, which was difficult for all these because of what was ordained. It was done piece-by-piece worthily of God's legislation. For under a pious suspicion, that [revelation] on the ground had greatness and length. It exists to be applied to the whole of what is according to the Law; as many things as concern the Tabernacle skene original: "σκηνῆς." The portable earthly dwelling place of God used by the Israelites. itself, both its measure and height, and the Testimony martyrion; these are for both laypeople and ministers leitourgon. As many things as are established by law concerning sacrifices thysion, and purifications katharsion, and offerings aphairematon original: "ἀφαιρεμάτων." Specifically the "heave-offerings" or portions set aside for the priests.; and that these are to be secret only to those who have been cleansed from the beginning, or because they are very close to His instruction original: "παιδεύσεως." Gregory views the Old Testament rituals as a form of "pedagogy" or school-training for the soul.; since...
And in this, the seeing touches upon the spectacles [of God]. On one hand, something is done according to the renewal by righteousness dikaiosyne, while on the other, it involves us being lifted from the humility below, so that it might be contained in a measured way by our created nature original: "γενητῇ φύσει." Gregory is explaining that humans, as created beings, cannot see God's full essence all at once; God must "measure" Himself to fit our limited capacity.. And in as much as He is uncontainable achoretos—for it is not possible otherwise to happen from an abundance—my body and my imprisoned mind original: "δεσμίου νοῦ." A common theme in Gregory's work: the soul is "bound" or "imprisoned" within the physical body and cannot yet perceive spiritual truth clearly. provide a clouded [vision]. Therefore, not everyone appears to belong to the same rank and station of worth; rather, one is on the way, as each is altogether according to the measure of his own purification katharseos. But others receive even beyond all hope, and enjoy [the vision] alone...
