In preparing this edition of the works of Philo of Alexandria, we have followed the text that the Englishman Thomas Mangey arranged to be printed in London in the year 1742, in two volumes, in large format, with magnificent type and on excellent paper. We have compared this with the books of Philo published by Pfeiffer in Erlangen, and with the edition of 1640, which is commonly called the Parisian edition. To the Philonic writings collected in the English edition, we have added two books, titled On the Festival of the Basket and On Honoring Parents, which Angelo Mai recently discovered for the first time in a Medicean manuscript of the Florentine library, and which he ordered to be printed in Milan in 1818 with a Latin translation and notes illustrating the text. As a result, our edition is the very first to contain all the books of Philo that could be found up to this time.
