And it is a super-celestial star, the source of the sensible stars, which one would not improperly call "all-radiant," from which the sun, the moon, and the other wandering and fixed stars draw their appropriate brightness, as far as each has the capacity, while that unmixed and pure ray is dimmed when it begins to turn in the transition from the intelligible to the sensible; for nothing in the realm of sense is pure.

§. 9. It is well said that

"darkness was over the abyss." Genesis 1:2

For in a way, the air is over the void, since it has stepped into and filled the entire vast, desolate, and empty region that extends to us from the lunar sphere. After the radiance of the intelligible light, which was made before the sun, the opposing darkness retreated, with God—who knows the nature of opposites and their innate conflict—partitioning and separating them. Thus, so that they might not always clash and rebel, and war prevail instead of peace by placing disorder in the world, he not only

"divided light and darkness,"

but also placed boundaries in the intermediate spaces,
7 with which he restrained each of the extremes.
P. For they were destined to cause confusion if adjacent, engaging in a great and unceasing struggle for dominance if middle boundaries had not been established to separate and dissolve the opposition.
