...and he himself follows this by calling the seventh day, which the Hebrews call the Sabbath, "Rest." Not, as some think, because the multitude refrained from their usual works for six days, but because the number seven, in the world and in ourselves, is truly without faction and without war, and is the most uncontentious and peaceful of all numbers. The powers within us are witnesses to this. For the six create an unceasing and continuous war on land and sea, namely the five senses and the vocal faculty; the former by the desire for sensible objects, from which they are pained if they do not obtain them, and the latter by speaking countless things with an unbridled mouth that ought to be kept in silence. But the seventh power, which resides in the ruling mind, when it becomes stronger than the six and, having conquered with most powerful strength, withdraws, embracing solitude and its own conversations with itself—as being in need of nothing else and perfectly self-sufficient—it is then, having been relieved of the cares and business of the mortal race, that it embraces a serene and calm life.

§. 6. He so honors the lover of virtue that, when genealogizing him, he does not make a list of grandfathers or great-grandfathers or ancestors, as is the custom with others, whether on the paternal or maternal side, but of certain virtues; almost crying out explicitly that there is no other home, kinship, or fatherland for the wise man than virtues and the deeds that accord with virtues.

"For these," he says, "are the generations of Noah: Noah was a righteous man, perfect in his generation, and he was well-pleasing to God." original: "Αὗται γὰρ αἱ γενέσεις Νῶε· Νῶε ἄνθρωπος δίκαιος, τέλειος ἐν τῇ γενεᾷ αὐτοῦ, τῷ θεῷ εὐηρέστησεν" (Gen. 6:9)

One must not be ignorant that he does not now call the rational mortal animal "man" by a common pattern, but rather the one by eminence who verifies the name.
