...He prepared those things contained in the world, wishing that the newly created being should lack nothing which contributes to life, and even to living well. Of these two, the former is provided by the abundance and plenty of things prepared for enjoyment; the latter by the contemplation of celestial things, by which the mind, being struck, conceives a love and desire for the knowledge of such matters. From this was born philosophy, through which man, although mortal, attains immortality. Therefore, just as hosts do not call guests to a banquet before the feast is well furnished; and as those who produce games or the spectacles of athletes—before the invited spectators assemble in the theaters or stadiums—prepare a multitude of competitors and those things which pertain to the delight of the eyes or ears; so also the Emperor of the whole world, like a host or a director of the games, being about to call man to both a banquet and a spectacle, prepared whatever pertained to both: so that, upon entering the world, he might soon find both a banquet and a most sacred theater. The one is filled with the riches which the land, rivers, sea, and air supply for both use and pleasure; the other with spectacles whose essence and qualities are stupendous, and whose movements and dances are most worthy of admiration, because of their most fitting order, their most apt proportion of number, and their wonderfully harmonious courses and recursions. In all of these, one might say without falsehood that there exists that true and archetypal music, which men afterwards, having it impressed upon their souls, handed down as an art most useful and supremely necessary for life. This indeed is the first cause for which man appears to have been set over all things.
A second cause must also be mentioned, which is not absurd. As soon as man was born, he found prepared whatever was necessary for life, so that he might learn for the future; with nature all but clearly crying out that it would be his lot, if he imitated the Author of his race, to lead a life without pain and without labor amidst the most fertile abundance. This would be so if neither pleasures contrary to reason occupied dominion in the soul—with the zeal for the belly and for lust established in it as if in fortified citadels—nor if the desires for glory, honors, and money usurped power for themselves in his life; nor if sorrows held the mind subject, depressed and bowed down; nor if fear, that evil counselor, repressed his noble impulses toward virtue; nor if imprudence, cowardice, injustice, and the crowd of other vices rushed in. For upon all these evils which I have just mentioned, just judgment takes notice—exacting punishment for impious pursuits from men who abuse their felicity, are devoted to depraved affections, and are poured out into desires which it is not even lawful to name.
Therefore, want necessarily follows those guilty of crimes. For, painfully plowing the fields and leading in spring and river streams, and furthermore sowing and planting, and undergoing the labor of agriculture by night and by day, they bring together their necessities year by year, and these sometimes meager and not quite sufficient, inasmuch as they are harmed by various causes. For either a flood has carried them away by perpetual rains, or hail falling in a single rush has broken them, or snow has scorched them with cold, or storms have uprooted them. For many unexpected changes of the air and waters bring about a scarcity of fruits. But if immoderate affections were softened by temperance, and the pursuit of honors and unjust gain were subjected to justice—and to speak briefly, if vicious and therefore vain actions departed in favor of those composed for virtue—with the war that is truly the most difficult and grievous of all removed from the soul, and with peace prevailing and establishing our endowments with gentleness and modesty:
