Referring to Marin Mersenne (1588–1648), the French polymath and Fludd's chief critic. is derived from evil—namely, from the spring of worldly wisdom and diabolical strife. "Let the heretics only take heed that no passage of Scripture can be understood as it ought to be, unless the authority of the Church be added, which is the judge of all controversies that can be moved concerning religion.
